Journal 1, Introduction

Hello, My name is Haley and I will be taking IDS2141 this fall semester. I am from Orlando, Fl, and have been going to FSU for a year now. Technology and I are not friends at all, I honestly only know the basics about how to use my computer, as well as my phone and thats pretty much it. However, I would like to know more about technology so that when I’m in a room of computer engineers and such, I won’t look like a deer in headlights, even though I don’t plan on being in said room any time in the future.

I have uploaded this picture of a window Air Conditioning unit because I bought it last weekend before going home to Orlando when the hurricane was supposed to hit central Florida (It didn’t). All I know about this Air conditioning unit is that is supposed to make a room cooler when its hot and I feel like that is a good example of how much I know about technology.

My First Message

My prior use of technology has always been for school and recreational use. I like to online shop so finding new extensions for Safari has been something that I see as one of the most technologically advanced things I have ever done. Otherwise, I gained a certification in a technology class I took in high school, but it has been so long I don’t even remember what it was called. I use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint quite a lot, but I am excited to learn new things and how they can be used in an educational setting.

I have always been interested in teaching, therefore making Education my minor was a no-brainer. However, I know very little about how to run a class room, let alone teach new things to students in a waythey can understand. Therefore, through this class I am hoping that I will learn to make lessons and activities more enjoyable and meaningful now that we are in an era of new technology. I am also hoping I will be exposed to the software and websites that teacher use everyday.

After taking the Learning Styles quiz, I realized that I have very specific ways that I learn. The results show that i lean very heavily towards Sensing and Visual, which did not come as a surprise because i have always done well when tested on pictures and diagrams and i can seem to remeber them better than I would a paragraph. However, I am surprised to see that I scored more in the Global range than sequential becasue when I study things, I feel that I am able to remember the sequence of things well, and have trouble relating subjects to other subjects.
